Climb onto the roof and locate the vent that is causing the noise. The patter or even the roar of falling rain or hail popping and cracking noises perhaps due to thermal expansion and contraction of roof coverings metal roofing or roof structure and transmitted noises from other external sources such as low flying aircraft or nearby trains or auto truck traffic from a nearby highway. Lift up the edges of the surrounding roof shingles so you can see the edges of the vent. The problem is when it rains the sound transmits through the ducting down to the range hood. Often a stiff wind will open vent dampers causing them to periodically clang shut. This is very loud and sounds like rain on a tin roof right above my head.
